BOKO: What was intended to be a proud milestone for Boko-Chaygaon quickly turned into an embarrassment after the entrance door of the newly-inaugurated Co-District Commissioner’s office developed cracks within minutes of its opening on Tuesday.
The office, located at Dakuapara in Boko, was formally inaugurated by Public Health Engineering Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. The event was expected to mark a new chapter in administrative efficiency for the region. However, the celebration was short-lived as cracks appeared and the main entrance door gave way, drawing murmurs of concern among attendees.
Eyewitnesses attributed the mishap to poor-quality construction work, allegedly under the supervision of the contractor and departmental engineer. The renovated facility stands on the premises of the former National Highways Authority of India’s Kamrup Division office, which was vacated after relocation. Renovation responsibilities were undertaken by the Public Works Department (Housing).
Minister Mallabaruah, prior to the incident, had expressed optimism that the new office would enhance service delivery and accessibility for residents. Following the mishap, newly appointed Co-District Commissioner Priyanshu Bharadwaj termed the incident ‘unfortunate’ and assured that necessary repairs would be undertaken promptly.
Attempts to reach PWD (Building) officials for comment went unanswered. The incident has reignited public concerns over the quality and accountability of government infrastructure projects, especially in critical administrative facilities meant to serve the public.
