Dr Deben Dutta lynching case: Death sentence to prime accused

Jorhat: The Jorhat District Session Judge Court announced the punishment for the convicts in the Dr Deben Dutta lynching case. 25 people were convicted for lynching a 73-year-old doctor of a dispensary in Teok Tea Estate in August 2019.

The court has awarded death sentence to the prime accused behind the lynching, Sanjay Rajowar. The other 24 convicts were sentenced for life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1000. They are Sanjib Rajowar, Suresh Rajowar, Ajoy Majhi, Upendra Bhumij, Ratul Rajowar, Bablu Rajowar, Anil Majhi, Bijoy Rajowar, Bolin Rajowar, Dipak Rajowar, Milon Rajowar, Rinku Majhi, Mishilal Majhi, Sibcharan Mahali, Debeswar Rajowar, Kartik Bhumiz, Sanjoy Rajowar, Kalicharan Mahali, Rameswar Bhumiz, Siba Mahali, Rahul Rajowar, Kalanag Majhi, Manoj Majhi, and Rinku Bakti.

Earlier on October 13, Judge Robin Phukan of the district and sessions court, Jorhat convicted all of the 25 tea workers under Sections 302/149, 342/149, 353/148, 353/149, of IPC.

32 people were accused in the lynching case, out of which one died during the investigation process. The other six accused were declared innocent.

The incident took place following the death of a plantation worker, Somra Majhi, whose treatment was allegedly delayed by Dr Dutta.
