Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary celebrated in Tezpur

TEZPUR: As part of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India’s two-year-long nationwide celebration honouring the legacy of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee (July 6, 2025 to 06 July 6, 2027), the District Administration, Sonitpur organized a commemorative event titled ‘Tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th Birth Anniversary’ on Sunday at the conference hall office of the District Commissioner, Sonitpur.

Welcoming the attendees, District Commissioner Ankur Bharali highlighted the importance of remembering and recognizing national stalwarts whose contributions have often remained underrepresented in mainstream narratives. He lauded the government’s initiative, which allows the younger generation to learn about such historic figures and their vital role in nation-building.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Sanjay Kumar Deka, Associate Professor of Botany, Darrang College, Tezpur. Dr Deka offered an insightful overview of Dr Mookerjee’s life, as a renowned academician, visionary politician, social thinker, reformer, and humanitarian. Born on July 6, 1901 in Calcutta, Dr Mookerjee was a freedom fighter and a compelling orator who dedicated his life to the unity and integrity of the nation. Dr Deka also reflected on his contributions during the Bengal Famine and his role in shaping modern India’s political discourse.

A documentary from the Prasar Bharati archives titled ‘Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee | Life & History’ was also screened for the audience.

The event was attended by additional district commissioners Kabita Kakati Konwar, Twahir Alam, and Manash Kumar Saikia, along with officials and staff from the district administration, heads of departments, distinguished citizens, invited guests, students, teachers, and other dignitaries.
