KOKRAJHAR: The District Social Welfare Office, Kokrajhar, in collaboration with the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Assam, organized a Drug Awareness Programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on Thursday at Nil Kamal Brahma Auditorium Hall of Kokrajhar Science College. The event aimed to create awareness among students and youth about the adverse effects of drug abuse and the collective role of society in building a drug-free community.
The programme was conducted in association with the Anti-Drug Club of Science College, Kokrajhar, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), and the Bodoland Community Counselling Centre.
The session began with Jintu Moni Phukan, DSWO, Kokrajhar, highlighting the objectives of the programme, and emphasizing the growing need for coordinated action to counter substance abuse through awareness, prevention, and rehabilitation.
Dr Washim Akhtar Bari, speaking on the harmful effects of substance abuse, explained the physical and mental consequences of drug addiction. He outlined various causes behind drug abuse including peer pressure, economic hardships, easy availability of substances, emotional distress, family conflicts, and feelings of inferiority or insecurity.
Devajit Mahanta, DSP, Kokrajhar, and Dhajen Basumatary, DTO, Kokrajhar, delivered powerful talks on the pivotal role of youth and society in shaping a drug-free Kokrajhar.
Ranjit Basumatary, Superintendent, Salvation Foundation, Debashree Bhargav, Executive Magistrate, Kokrajhar, and Madhav Upadhyay, representative from DLSA, also spoke on the occasion and highlighted how prevention of substance abuse is not just the responsibility of authorities, but of every citizen, especially the youth, who must rise as responsible torchbearers of a healthier and drug-free society.
The programme was also attended by the I/C DIPRO, Kokrajhar, the Vice-Principal of Science College, students, teachers, officials, and other esteemed guests.
