GUWAHATI: In order to ensure a smooth Assembly election, the Kamrup District Administration has declared dry days banning sale and consumption of alcohol during the third phase of the ensuing Assam Assembly elections 2021 on April 6 as well as the day of counting of votes on May 2.

The ban on liquor will remain effective for 48 hours starting from 6 pm till 6 pm when the polling concludes on a day.

According to an order issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner on April 1, it has been stated that, "In continuation with third phase of election to the State Legislative Assembly, dry day is declared in Kamrup Metropolitan District w.e.f from 6 PM of April 4 to 6 PM of April 6. The ban will also include the day of counting of the votes which is fixed on May 2 till the process of counting is over and including the day of Re-poll if any."

The order further mentioned that during the said period possession, distribution and sale of liquor is completely prohibited. All the wholesale/bonded warehouses, IMFL Retail "Off" and "On" shops including Club "On", Hotel "On" and country spirit shops located at above places will remain closed during the said period. 

The order further mentioned that any violation will be dealt with stringent action as per law.

Earlier on March 20 as per a WT message the state government has declared dry days banning sale and consumption of alcohol during all three phases of the ensuing Assam Assembly elections 2021.

The Assam Governor has prohibited the possession of any intoxicants by any person or group of persons during the dry days.

According to the order, apart from the polling days, the dry day will remain effective on the day of the counting of votes – May 2, 2021. The ban on liquor will also remain effective on the day of re-poll.
