Earthquake in Assam: 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Sonitpur, Tremor Jolt Guwahati

Earthquake in Assam: An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Sonitpur in Assam. Guwahati and the surrounding areas experienced powerful jolts.

GUWAHATI: Around 8 am on Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Sonitpur in Assam. No harm was indicated. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

On the other hand, Guwahati and the surrounding areas felt powerful jolts. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) claims that Sonitpur was the earthquake's epicenter.

According to a report, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.4, Occurred on 29-05-2023, 08:03:35 IST, Lat: 26.68 & Long: 92.35, Depth: 15 Km ,Region: Sonitpur, Assam.”

Meanwhile, at roughly 7.48 am on May 29, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 shook the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

According to National Center of Seismology, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.2, Occurred on 29-05-2023, 07:48:20 IST, Lat: 13.47 & Long: 94.24, Depth: 70 Km ,Location: 137km E of Diglipur, Andaman and Nicobar island, India.”

Moreover, additionally, tremors were detected in several areas of Pakistan, Srinagar, Poonch, and the Delhi-NCR regions in Jammu & Kashmir. People fled their homes in a panic when the earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir. They posted videos of their homes' swaying ceiling fans.

On May 26, according to a report, a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck eastern Japan. However, there was no tsunami warning. According to local media, the earthquake struck around 1003 GMT, rattling buildings in Tokyo and nearby prefectures.

Japan is one of the seismically active countries in the world, and earthquakes frequently occur there. About one-fifth of all earthquakes with a magnitude of six or higher that occur worldwide occur in Japan.

The largest earthquake and tsunami to ever hit Japan struck the northeast coast on March 11, 2011, with a magnitude of 9. The world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl 25 years ago was brought on by such occurrences.
