LAKHIMPUR: Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, was celebrated centrally in North Lakhimpur Kendriya Eidgah on December 24 and December 25.
Organized by North Lakhimpur Kendriya Eidgah Commitee in association with eight mosque management committees of North Lakhimpur, the two-day programme began on Saturday morning with the hoisting of the flag by the president of the organizing committee Sadiqul Hussain. This was followed by felicitation of eminent persons from North Lakhimpur. Various literary and cultural competitions for students like recitation of Quran, Zikir, Ghazal, drawing, essay, quiz, extempore competitions were organized on the first day of the celebrations.
On the second day of the programme, an open session with prize distribution was held. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr Hafeez Ahmed, secretary of Char-Chapari Sahitya Parishad. The session was chaired by Sadiqul Hussain, president of the organizing committee. The objective of the meeting was explained by Akhtar bin Siraz Ahmed, secretary of the organizing committee. Dr Dilip Bora, Professor of Gauhati University, attended the session as the appointed speaker. In his address Dr Bora called to emulate the ideals of Prophet Muhammad in bringing transformation in the society and stressed moving beyond religious dogmatism. He appealed to everyone to refrain from communalism and instil an inclusive and tolerant society with focus on education, economic development and social justice.
Veteran artist and former president of Asom Natya Sanmilan, Sayed Nazim Ahmed was felicitated in that session. The session was also attended by Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah. In his address, MP Baruah announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the development of North Lakhimpur Town Kendriya Eidgah. Eminent social worker Phanidhar Baruah also attended the session as guest of honour. Eminent Islamic scholar Isfaqur Rahman from Tezpur was also present.
