HAFLONG: With the aim to join the mainstream, as many as eight militants of the Kuki Tribal Union (KTU) surrendered before the Commanding Officer, 11 Assam Rifles at its camp base at Sarkari Bagan at Haflong on Friday. Assam Rifles had been convincing the cadres since months after their extortion/ demand activities were detected. All the surrendered cadres were broke-away members of militant group Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) who joined the KTU.
"The group operates mainly in Kuki-dominated areas of Nagaland, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong in Assam and Manipur. The group recently started collecting taxes in Jiribam and Tamenglong," said sources.
"The group is affiliated with the NSCN (IM) and is receiving training from them at Hebron camp in Nagaland. It can be said they are wings of NSCN (IM) since it is the only Kuki militant organization working closely with the NSCN (IM)," added sources.
