NUMALIGARH: One Malayan Box Turtle was rescued from an area near Habigaon, Morangi on Friday. The turtle was rescued by a teenager, Prashanta Kalita, son of Praneswar Kalita. He saw the turtle in the paddy fields while he went to bring back their cattle from the grazing grounds. Some miscreants tried to take away the turtle to cook it. But another youth of the area, Bibek Bora took initiative and informed the forest officials about the recovery of the turtle. After being informed, a team of foresters of Golaghat Forest division came to the spot. The Endangered Turtle was safely handed over to the forest officials by the teenager.

The Malayan Box Turtle comes under the List of Endangered Species of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Malayan box turtles are found only in lowland tropical rainforest areas of Southeast Asia. The turtles are in high demand in East Asia for their meat and for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Later, the foresters released the rescued turtle at an undisclosed location inside Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary.
