SILCHAR: The Forest Department on Monday issued eviction notices to residents of the Cheragi Reserved Forest in Sribhumi, labeling them as “illegal dwellers.” The notices clearly stated that the residents must vacate the reserved forest within 30 days. Failure to comply will result in forceful eviction by the authorities. The department claimed that the unauthorized settlement has disrupted the ecological balance of the forest.
This marks the first eviction move in the Barak Valley amid a series of eviction drives being carried out across the state in recent days. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a recent press conference, noted that significant encroachments have taken place in the Sribhumi and Hailakandi districts of the Barak Valley.
