JAGIROAD: The fate of Nagaon Paper Mill (NPM) and Cachar Paper Mill (CPM) under the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) would be decided on September 14 by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

Sources said that the State and the Central governments so far did not initiate any step to safeguard both the mills from the threat supposed to happen on September 14. It is learnt that following non-payment of bills, a contractor filed a case way back against the mill authority and since then the NCLT had taken over the matter. Both the mills were not functioning since the last three years and the government is allegedly giving mere assurances only.

The Kagaj Nigam Karmi Union (KNKU), while expressing grave concern over the attitude of the government, said that many employees of the NPM and the CPM died of medical ailment and some even committed suicide. The employees have demanded the State and the Central governments to take concrete step before September 14. They further said that they would not allow any private company to take over the mill before clearance of their outstanding dues pending since more than three years. They also lamented that if Kerala government could run a unit of the HPC, then why could not the Government of Assam do so in the same spirit?
