LAKHIMPUR: The North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), a reputed higher educational institution of the State, has established a new milestone in its glorious journey with the declaration made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that the first autonomous college of the State would be upgraded to a university.
The Chief Minister made this declaration on Saturday while inaugurating the North East Education Conclave organized by the Education Department at the Sankardev Education and Research Foundation. According to him, four more colleges of the State-- Nagaon College, JB College of Jorhat, Sivasagar College and Hundique Girls' College of Guwahati will also be upgraded to the same status along with North Lakhimpur College. Process for the upgradation will be completed within the next two years.
In the wake of the declaration, the euphoria has engulfed the entire Lakhimpur district including all the districts of North Assam. This status of the college will herald a new horizon in the academic arena of the entire area.
Notably, the North Lakhimpur College was established on July 3 in 1952. In 2012, the college was accredited with an "A" grade by the NAAC with a CGPA of 3.08. On 30 May 2013, North Lakhimpur College received a letter from the University Grants Commission granting it the status of an autonomous college.
Since its establishment, the college has been spreading the light of wisdom with a motto: "Let noble thoughts come from all directions."
The college was a fruit of the efforts and zeal of a core group of far-sighted people in particular and the people of this vast region in general. The college offers major (Honours) courses in almost all customary subjects in the Arts and Science streams. It has 19 departments. The college accommodates nearly 1,000 students in the undergraduate courses, and it receives inter-state students.
The college offers courses of Higher Secondary (Arts and Science), Bachelor's Degree (Arts and Science), Computer Science Degree (BCA), PG Diploma Courses, Plant Tissue-Culture Postgraduate Diploma, Disaster Management, Postgraduate Diploma, Certificate Courses on Human Rights Diploma, Electronics, Appliances Repairing Diploma, Herbal Plantation Diploma, Foundation Courses, UGC Career Oriented Courses etc. The college also offers the courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University and Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University in the respective study centres of the open Universities in the college.
