Flash flood caused by River Jiadhol wreaks havoc in Dhemaji

LAKHIMPUR: Due to incessant downpour in the neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh, the water level of the River Jiadhol, the sub-tributary of the Brahmaputra, has risen since Monday night. As a result of it, the overflown water of the river, which is known as the 'Sorrow of Dhemaji', inundated almost 20 revenue villages, including Somorajan, Chechahor, Balijan, Goroimari, Hechuli under Pachim Dhemaji area on Tuesday. The sudden surge of the flash flood has crippled normal life of the people living at the affected villages including the livestock.

In addition, the flood caused by the river, which traverses a peculiar topography originating from the Abor Hills of Arunachal Pradesh, has submerged around 300 metre-long stretch of the NH-15 at Bhaju Gaon affecting the communication system. The rapid surge of the overflown water also washed away a 500-metre stretch of the cofferdam constructed at Barman Gaon area by investing a fund of over Rs 2 crore. The river is flowing above danger level at Barman Gaon till the time of filing this report.
