Assam Forest Official's Death: 3 Absconding Suspects Surrender to Police

GUWAHATI: Three people were reportedly detained in connection with the case a week after the death of a forest department worker in Assam's Goalpara district.

Ranjan Rabha, Kushal Rabha, and Jitul Rabha, the three suspects, were detained by the Dudhnoi Police.

After perpetrating the crime, the accused fled but turned themselves in to the police on Tuesday night in Dudhnoi, whereupon they were arrested, according to sources.

In connection with the case, nine suspects have been detained so far, eight of whom have been detained for ten days by the police.

It should be noted that on May 29, a brawl is said to have broken out at Krishnai Salpara Darapara in Goalpara as a result of a forest department operation against specific inputs of illegal timber smuggling in the Boro Matia Reserved Forest, where a group of suspected timber smugglers attacked the team with sharp weapons.

The incident, which occurred after the investigative team had confiscated a tractor and a lumber cache intended for covert export, was said to have implicated some local residents of the area as well, according to sources.

The officials' team was robbed, according to the authorities, and their cell phone and two gold rings were taken.

The deceased employee of the forest department has been identified as Rajbir Ahmed. The three officers who have been hurt are Mobinur Rahman, Najrul Islam, and Mustafa Ali. They were taken for quick medical attention, and are now being treated at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

After being hurt and being rescued by the police, Rajbir Ahmed was taken to the Solace Hospital in Goalpara. His was afterwards relocated to the Guwahati Excel Care Hospital, where he received immediate medical attention before being declared dead.

The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) described the occurrence in the following manner:  "A very tragic incident has occurred. Hope the police will conduct a thorough investigation. Our staff has been attacked by sharp weapons. They have been attacked by machetes and also with bamboo. I have been told that a group of people had surrounded the forest officers. The driver and one of our officers named Mobinur Rahman have been targeted. Till now, the police have not arrested any person in connection to the case. However, their efforts in saving the lives of the staff have been recommendable. They have taken action at the right time. I would like to thank the police for this."
