Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta admitted to Hospital in Guwahati

Guwahati: Former Assam Chief Minister and AGP leader Prafulla Mahanta has been admitted to a hospital in Guwahati on Saturday afternoon.

As per the sources, he was admitted to Downtown hospital.

Mahanta has been in and out of the hospital over the past few months due to several health issues. He was admitted to Downtown Hospital earlier too. He was recently admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He was discharged recently.

Mahanta who became the chief minister of the state when the AGP came to power in 1985, could not contest the just concluded Assam Assembly elections of 2021. Mahanta became Assam's youngest chief minister at 33 years when he was sworn in as the chief minister in 1985. He served as the Assam CM of the state for two terms, 1985–1990 and 1996–2001.

He is also a former president of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) between 1979 and 1985. In August 2005, his membership in the AGP was terminated.

He was one of the signatories of the Assam Accord 1985.
