BISWANATH CHARIALI: Prominent artiste, actor, filmmaker, first film director of the tea community and former independent MLA of Biswanath Legislative Constituency, Padma Koiri passed away at the age of 70 on Sunday night. Kairi, who had been suffering from ailment for a long time, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Guwahati. Padma Kairi died on Sunday night in the hospital.

He was the producer, director and actor of Budhu Arjun, a popular film based on the story of the tea community. He also made and acted in a good number of films like Ranganadi, Ratanlal, Maya and Maa. In addition to this, Koiri also produced and directed several popular serials of the time on Doordarshan Guwahati and North-East. He also acted in several episodes.

In 1985, Koiri became the MLA of Biswanath Legislative Constituency after winning the election as an independent candidate. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives.

The last rites were performed here on Monday with full State honour. State Handloom and Textile Minister Ranjit Dutta, MLAs Pramod Borthakur and others attended were present.
