BISWANATH CHARIALI: In a significant judgement, Biswanath Chariali Additional District and Sessions Judge Court sentenced four persons namely Deliram Bey, Anima Ranghangpi, Raju Bey, and Naren Ranghang to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code on Monday in a witch-hunting case that had taken place in 2015.

An elderly woman was brutally murdered on suspicion of being a witch in Bhimajuli village bordering Arunachal Pradesh, under Biswanath Chariali police station in Biswanath district in 2015. A group of about 30 to 35 people led by Anima Ranghangpi and Deliram Bey dragged one Laila Orang’s mother to a riverside accusing her to be a witch on July 20, 2015 and subsequently decapitated her. Laila Orang lodged an FIR at Biswanath Chariali police station in connection with the incident. On the basis of her complaint, a case was registered bearing number 224/15 and an investigation was carried out under sections 143/448/302 of Indian Penal Code. At least 17 accused persons were arrested following the investigation. Out of them, one accused died during the trial.

However, the rest were acquitted by the court. Additional Public Prosecutors Jahnabi Kalita and Arun Khatiwora assisted the prosecution in the case.
