ORANG: In a significant step towards promoting self-reliance and sustainable income among rural women, a special initiative was conducted on Wednesday at the Bhergaon Eri Cocoon Production and Demonstration Centre. The event, held from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, saw the free distribution of Eri silkworm seeds and essential host plant saplings to 50 economically weaker individuals.
The drive was led by BTR’s Eri Mission executive member, Daobaisa Boro, who emphasized the importance of encouraging women, especially from the tea garden areas, to engage in Eri sericulture by utilizing their unused land for plantation. The distributed host plant is considered vital for Muga cultivation, an integral part of Assam’s silk heritage.
Speaking at the event, BTR’s Sericulture Department Officer Mallika Basumatary highlighted the department’s focus on empowering women through sericulture. Tinkumoni Boro, principal of the Bhergaon VCDC, Nihir Khungur Boro, Veben Rabha, Bhupen Deka, Youth UPPL president of Bhergaon Daoharu Boro, and BTR Fellow Bijoy Boro were among the key dignitaries present during the event, along with a large gathering of local residents.
Adding to the knowledge sharing aspect of the initiative, Dr Gunamoni Deka, Principal of the Eri Cocoon Production Centre, provided a detailed demonstration on how to plant and nurture the saplings, as well as rear Eri silkworms efficiently. His session aimed to inspire women to take up Eri farming as a viable source of livelihood.
