GAURISAGAR: Sensation prevailed at Gaurisagar following the death of a youth accused of bike theft in Gaurisagar police's custody in the Sivasagar district on Wednesday morning.

According to police sources, on Tuesday evening a Pulsar motorbike bearing registration number AS04-H 4830 of one Putul Das, a resident of Gaurisagar Nagaali, was stolen away by some unknown miscreant from the Gaurisagar weekly market which is held every Tuesday in front of the Police Station. Gaurisagar police investigated the case and based on CCTV footage, a team of Gaurisagar Police led by Officer in-charge Satyajit Borthakur picked up one Babu Guwala, son of Jogen Guwala, from his Gaurisagar residence.

During interrogation, Bubu confessed his to stealing the bike. Police told the media that Bubu fled from police custody while he accompanied the police team to recover the stolen bike from a place and jumped into the Gaurisagar Borpukhuri close to the police station. As soon as police personnel recovered him from the pond, they immediately admitted him in Sibsagar Civil Hospital but the doctors declared him as dead.

Police immediately informed Babu's family. As the news spread, local people gheraoed Gaurisagar Police Station. Family members alleged that as it was a planned murder and demanded judicial inquiry. They also demanded that the CCTV footage should be made public. Family members refused to receive the body.

Seeing the situation, the police administration deployed additional police and paramilitary forces. Additional SP Devajit Nath, DSP Daisy Gogoi, Jugal Kishore Kalita, OC Sivasagar Sadar Police Station, took stock of the situation.

In presence of the activists of AASU, AATTSA Gaurisagar Regional Committees and local people, the NH-37 was blocked for a while demanding judiciary inquiry in the case and to punish the guilty police officers. They also vehemently condemned the accident. The organizations submitted a memorandum to Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner seeking justice. Superintendent of Police, Sivasagar, immediately suspended Satyajit Borthakur, OC of the Gaurisagar Police Station. After post mortem, the body of Babu Guwala's handed was over his family. In a gloomy atmosphere, his body was cremated in the presence of police and well-wishers at Gaurisagar public cremation ground. He leaves behind his wife and a 4-year boy.
