TINSUKIA: The 46th death anniversary of Mising singer-composer Ganasilpi Bikram Singh Yein was observed in Tinsukia under the joint aegis of Bishnujyoti Sanskritik Samaj (BSS) and Tinsukia Town Mising Kebang at Bishnujyoti Sanskritik Samaj Auditorium on Tuesday in the presence of a distinguished gathering of artistes.

Presided over by Khogeswar Taye, vice president, BSS, and Indreswar Yein, president, Tinsukia Town Mising Kebang, the programme began with a tribute at the portrait of Bikram Singh Yein followed by a chorus presented by the artistes of BSS. In his deliberation as chief guest, Suraj Kumar Patiri, former vice president, Mising Dirbi Kabang, and an AIR artiste, recalled the contributions of the Ganasilpi who was devoted to progressive activities in the 1960s and his connection with the Assamese cultural arena and literary activities. He also elaborated Yein’s close association with legendary singer-composer and litterateur Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Noted Mising scholar Dr Pabitra Kumar Pegu also addressed the gathering and reflected on the life and journey of the late icon. Both Patiri and Dr Pegu enthralled the audience with a few songs. Rupa Mili Patir also sang from Yein’s composed songs.

Earlier, Secretary of BSS Purna Kakoti, while laying the objective, stated that unchecked globalization and cultural aggression had led to the marginalization of many local traditions, languages, and customs. He also dwelt at length on the life and profile of Ganasilpi.

The programme concluded with the adoption of two resolutions: a broad-based workshop under the guidance of Dr Pabitra Kr Pegu will be organized in July, and the concerned officials will be urged to broadcast Bikram Singh Yein’s songs every year on his death anniversary, June 24.
