MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the nationwide celebration of 153rd Gandhi Jayanti, a good number of citizens, women activists and students joined the celebration organized by Darrang district administration on Sunday at Gandhi Smriti Udyan here.

Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarma marked the beginning of the celebration by lighting a lamp in a traditional way and offered floral tribute at the memorial where the holy ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were kept in 1948. Inaugurating the function he recalled the rare leadership of Gandhiji in the freedom struggle and described the relevance of Gandhian philosophy and non-violence in today's life, which is well reflected in the UN's resolution to celebrate this day as the International Day of Non-Violence worldwide.

Earlier, singer of repute Pranjal Sarma and Rinti Moni Deka performed the Ramdhun and a bhajan while retired teacher Tarun Chandra Sarma, Moulana Sheikh Farid Rizvi and Babul Marak chanted the holy Gita, Quran and Bible. Former Principal of Kharupetia College, Dr Budhin Hazarika and media person Bhargab Kumar Das, taking part in the celebration, talked about the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi and relevance of his ideologies in present society.

NAGAON: Lions Club, Nagaon on Sunday observed the birth anniversary of the Father of Nation as well as former Prime Minister of the country, Lal Bahadur Shastri at its office premise with a day-long agenda.

Malchand Agarwal, Saranga Ballabh Goswami, the president and secretary of the club respectively , Biswajit Mahanta, Gurusaran Singh, Binod Khetaot and other club members garlanded the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi as well as Lal Bahadur Shastri and also lit the earthen lamps before the portraits. During the programme, the president of the club, Malchand Agarwal elaborated the life and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi as well as Lal Bahadur Shastri towards the nation. The celebration was concluded with a devotional cultural programme.
