Gargaon College initiates series of programmes at Sivasagar and Demow

SIVASAGAR: The Department of Commerce, Gargaon College, in collaboration with an NGO, Society for Human Advancement & Promotion of Employment (SHAPE), organized an industrial tour to the District Industries & Commerce Center (DICC) Industrial Area located at Sivasagar and Demow on Wednesday.

The objective of the programme was to provide the students an insight regarding the internal working of companies. Industrial visits provide students much relevant practical perspective of the actual work place and give them exposure to a larger world of business by allowing them to interact with industry experts, to gain access to new learning experience, management lessons and inter personal skills enhancement. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, noted columnist and Principal of Gargaon College, appreciated the initiative taken by the faculty members of Commerce Department, Gargaon College for organizing such an innovative programme for enriching the skills of the students. The programme was enriched by the presence of General Manager DICC, Devajit Deuri and General Secretary, SHAPE, Parag Goswami who explained the formation and operating process of the entities.

The programme aimed at helping the students combine their theoretical knowledge of business operation with the practical knowledge of its actual functioning. The event was also joined by the students from Nazira HS & MP School, Dholebagen High School, Lakwa Tantiya High School, Sibsagar HS & MP School and Sarathi Junior College, Sivasagar. The event was jointly coordinated by Assistant Professor Dr Mrinal Ghosh and Gautom Hazarika. The Assamese Department of the college, in collaboration with the Gargaon chapter of Assam Xahitya Xabha, also launched a Dibrugarh University recognized add-on course on creative writing on June 1. Inaugurating the course, eminent academic, poet and Principal of the college, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta encouraged the students to take up the course and opined that this course would help the students to hone their skills in creative writing.

Head of the Department of Assamese, Gargaon College, Nilakhi Chetia and Devajani Bakalial, Assistant Professor, as the cocoordinators of the programme, informed that the theoretical and practical aspects of this 30-hour course would be offered in a blended mode.

A statistical survey was also successfully carried out by the Department of Statistics of the college in their adopted model village Longkak Gohain Gaon situated near Sunpura on Tuesday. The programme was collaborated by the Parents-Teacher Association of the Department of Statistics. The team was led by Dr Ranjana Gogoi, head of the Department of Statistics, and the students surveyed almost 82 households of the village and collected data on the benefits gained by them from various government schemes as well as from self-help groups and micro finance institutions. From the survey, the students gained information regarding various socio- economic variables of the village folk. The team visited 910 Longkak Gohain Gaon Primary School and distributed learning material and light refreshment packets among students.
