SIVASAGAR: Commemorating the birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr SR Ranganathan, the 133rd National Librarian’s Day was observed on Tuesday at Gargaon College.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp at the Central Library of the college. Dr Pankaj Kumar Nath, Librarian of Central Library of Gargaon College, welcomed the gathering and spoke about the life and legacy of Padma Shri Dr SR Ranganathan, who is also known as the ‘Father of Library Science.’ Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, distinguished academician, columnist, and Principal of Gargaon College, delivered an invigorating speech highlighting the enduring relevance of books and libraries. Considering the rising influence of artificial intelligence, he urged the student fraternity to prioritize original thought, ethical awareness, and responsible AI usage.
Dr Dilip Kumar Deka, Head and Associate Professor of the Department of Geography, also spoke on the occasion. Dr Deka, in his lecture, highlighted the importance of books and the need to inculcate reading habits among the new generation. Pranab Dowerah, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Assamese, and Biju Phukan, president of Gargaon College Employees’ Unit, also graced the occasion.
The formal programme was followed by a spot article writing competition among the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the college. The programme was attended by students, library staff, faculty members, and members of the non-teaching staff of the college.
