GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court called for detailed reports from relevant courts regarding the status of pending cases involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) on March 11.

The division bench, consisting of Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury, was addressing a suo moto writ petition concerning these cases.

After an earlier order dated January 28, 2025, the court considered a report filed by the Registry on March 10, which indicated the position of cases in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The court observed that seven out of 15 cases pending in the Principal Seat of the Gauhati High Court have been decided, and the remaining eight are at an advanced stage of hearing.

But the court was concerned about several cases in Assam's district judiciary that have been pending at the appearance stage for years, some of them more than a decade. The judges asked for an explanation of the lack of transparency in the reasons for such delays and instructed the Registry to collect certain information from the concerned authorities.

Additionally, the court highlighted that several cases are pending due to stay orders issued by the High Court. It instructed the Registry to compile a list of such cases and seek approval for a Special Bench to expedite their resolution.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the court observed eight pending cases, one of which was from 1996 still waiting for evidence recording. The court directed the Registry to seek information regarding the reasons for such delays and the steps taken by presiding officers to advance proceedings. The case is listed for further hearing on April 29.
