GOALPARA: In a solemn and powerful show of solidarity, the 30 Assam Battalion NCC and 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC, in collaboration with Goalpara College, organized a peace procession on Wednesday to raise their collective voice against the brutal rape and murder of Manika Barman, an NCC cadet of 7 Assam Battalion NCC, Dhubri, and a resident of Bajali district, Assam. The tragic incident occurred on July 19, shaking the conscience of the entire region.
The rally began from the Goalpara College gate and proceeded peacefully towards the town’s Police Point, drawing attention from passersby and local residents. Holding banners calling for justice and safety for women, a total of 53 students participated in the procession.
The rally was led by Dr Subhash Barman, Principal of Goalpara College, and Dr Santosh Kumar Mishra, Vice-Principal, accompanied by Assistant Professor Kavita Basumatary, Coordinator of 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC, Goalpara, and Assistant Professor Dr Nabanita Das.
The organizers emphasized the need for swift and transparent justice in cases of gender-based violence. The procession symbolized not only protest but also a collective demand for safety, accountability, and social awareness. Following the procession, Goalpara College authorities submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding fast-track judicial proceedings, transparent investigation, strict and exemplary punishment for the guilty.
The college community, along with the NCC units, condemned the inhuman act in the strongest terms and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that such heinous crimes did not go unpunished.
