BONGAIGAON: A golden langur was found dead on Thursday due to electrocution. The incident occurred in the Chokapara Katuripara area under Kakoijana reserve forest of Bongaigaon district. As reported by villagers of Katuripara, the golden langur came in contact with a live, uninsulated cable of a transformer and died immediately. Noticing the dead golden langur, the villagers took it down with the help of the concerned authority and expressed deep condolence for the death of the rare species animal.

Talking to the press, Bikram Ranjan Roy, a social and nature worker of Bongaigaon, said that this was the second such case of a golden langur being electrocuted in a timespan of one week. “Before this, on August 3, another golden Langur was injured after coming in contact with a live wire of a transformer,” he said.

“There remains a small part of live, uninsulated wire near transformers. We talked to the electricity department in this regard but they stated that that particular part can’t be insulated for some technical reason. There are a total of 56 such transformers in neighbouring areas of Kakoijana reserve forest where movement of golden langurs is frequent. We demanded the electricity department to cover such naked areas with net so that no golden langur comes in contact with live wires. But this has not been done yet due to which, these pathetic incidents are occurring repeatedly. We demand that covering of live electrical wires should be done immediately to avert further deaths of golden langurs,” he stated.
