GORESWAR: An unwanted situation took place on Monday at Goreswar College in Baksa district during the Goreswar College Students’ Union election and finally police and CRPF had to be called to bring the situation under control.
The election was held to form the new students’ union body of the college. Rupam Rajbangshi, a student of the college as well as the secretary of Goreswar Anchalik Students’ Union, told media persons that polling was going on smoothly.
After about 30 percent to 35 percent of students had cast their votes, a female student of the college came to cast her vote with an identity card which allegedly did not belong to her. The matter came to the notice of another student of the college and the election officer was informed. The polling was suspended. The matter was discussed among the student bodies and the college authority and it was decided to start the polling again. But the decision was opposed by AASU activists. Some students demanded that the election should be stopped.
Amidst all this, Sajal Nama Das, an activist of Bengali Youth-Student Federation allegedly shouted anti-AASU slogans and this worsened the situation. AASU activists gheraoed him. The college authority had to call the police to control the situation. The police of Goreswar police station came with CRPF jawans and brought the situation under control. Later Sajal Nama Das admitted his fault but the students refused to allow polling to continue. The election officials announced the conclusion of the election for the college union at 2 pm. Goreswar Police took all four ballot boxes to the police station.
