Guwahati: Durga Puja committees opt for 'spiritual' Durga Puja amid COVID-19 crisis

Guwahati: Durga Puja celebrations in Guwahati are likely to be muted this year as all the puja committees have unanimously decided to hold pujas without the usual fervour, instead opting for simple celebrations to ensure that devotees get to catch a glimpse of the mother goddess.

In a meeting held between the puja committees, the Kamrup (M) district administration, and the local police, it was decided that the spirit of the puja shall be "spiritual" this time around. Additionally, 50% of the committees said that they would perform a 'ghat puja' instead of opting for the more commonly-used idols. The committees also said that the cultural programmes would be done away with by the puja committees.

"We have had a discussion with the district administration and given out recommendations. However, they could not give a clear cut answer today itself. They will now hold discussions with the State Government and consequently inform us of their decision," said a committee member from Pandu.
