Guwahati: Guwahati born girl, Rachna Nath has been able to bag one-of-its-kind laurels and fame for her motherland by being awarded the prestigious Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators for the year 2019.

Rachna, the daughter of Dispur, Guwahati based Akshay Majumdar and Rekha Majumdar, is the eldest of three children in the family and have been living in Arizona since 2003. She has been an environmental advocate since her childhood and the reward for her love of the environment is received by her finally.

Rachna and another girl have won the award from within California, Neveda and Arizona. She had shifted to Arizona and joined Arizona College Prep-Erie. Her effort so far was to enrich her students with critical thinking along with Problem solving skills by using which they can go for research-based, place-based and claim based evidence and reasoning methods.

Her students, enriched with her teaching, are working with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for increasing their awareness about Volatile Organic Substances (VOC’s). They are also learning to develop a reusable, organic, VOC-free air freshener. Furthermore, the students have learned to organize e-waste collection events as well. Rachna too is working on developing a product which will prevent swarming of Bees for which she is using household herbs and spices. What is more, she has a Patent-pending for the same.

She is also seeking sponsors and funding for her student’s environmental sustainability projects and the good news is that she has been able to secure several grants. The grants won by her include the Society for Science and the Public and Flinn Foundation grant by using which she will build a Biophysics pipeline to Arizona State University.

For an Assam born girl to earn such distinguished laurels in the international platform is a matter of great pride and honour for its people. At a time when some people are throwing away their girl child, such instances set by the daughters are worth an applaud.
