Hailakandi observes Martyrs’ Day with 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

Hailakandi: Along with the rest of the nation, Martyrs’ Day coinciding with the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was observed in Hailakandi district.

Senior officials and employees of the district administration and government offices paid floral tributes at the life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Ghat on Thursday.

District Development Commissioner, Vikram Dev Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem, Circle Officer, Tridip Roy, and others paid homage on the occasion.

A two-minute silence was observed to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the freedom of the country from imperialist rule. Vehicular traffic came to a standstill following the blaring of the siren on the dot 10.59 am with people paying homage to the father of the nation by observing silence.

The invaluable contributions of Gandhiji and the countless freedom fighters in freeing the country from the yoke of slavery through the greatest weapon of non-violence and giving us the air of freedom to breathe were fondly remembered. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30 and the day is known as Martyrs Day.
