Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Stipend for Female PG Students

GUWAHATI: The state government of Assam has announced a new stipend for girl students of the state. All female students at the postgraduate level will receive Rs 10000 annually from the government.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a new scheme by his government to encourage girls of the state to take up higher education. He announced this on Wednesday while distributing the Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Awards of 2022 to deserving candidates. As many as 35800 students received this award which constitutes a two-wheeler vehicle and a certificate.

The new scheme will cover all the female students pursuing a post-graduation degree in the educational institutions of the state. The students will receive a stipend of Rs 1000 per month for 10 months of the year, amounting to a total of Rs 10000 annually. The stipend will not be given for two months every year as the educational institutions remain closed for that duration due to academic reasons like semester breaks and examinations.

"Through this upcoming scheme female students pursuing post-graduate programmes in educational institutions of the state would be provided with a yearly stipend of Rs 10,000 each. This would be helpful in covering their commutation and other related expenses, " mentioned Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister also added that the qualifying students will have to apply online to access this new scheme. He urged all the students to apply online as soon as the portal is launched, which is supposed to happen a few weeks after the date of the announcement. Following the application, the education department of the state will take up the necessary steps to ensure that the students receive the stipend.

Speaking on the occasion, he also stressed the need of being digitally educated to survive in the modern day.
