NAZIRA: There are many treasures of the Ahom dynasty that bear their golden signature of architecture, art, and culture. The Archaeological Survey of India and the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam are responsible for the scientific preservation and enhancement of these ancient monuments including historical temples, stone bridges, etc. scattered across the state. Unfortunately, many ancient monuments have already been destroyed, and other historical treasures are on the verge of destruction due to the negligence of these two departments.

Similarly, another heritage site falling prey to destruction is the historic Vishnu Dol or Piyoli Phukan Dol, located in Gelki Dolbari village of Nazira. Notably, Piyoli Phukan had constructed this Vishnu Dol in the 18th century, along with another Shiva Dol within the same premises. Due to lack of preservation, the Shiva Dol has been completely destroyed, and the Vishnu Dol is also currently on the verge of collapse.

Currently, it is increasingly surrounded by parasitic plants and shrubs on its concrete walls, poles, etc. The roots of these parasitic plants and creepers have also caused spreading damage to the pavement.

The Director of Welfare of SC&BC, Assam had allocated Rs 40 lakh for the construction and beautification of the concrete walls around the Piyoli Phukan Dol. The project, aimed at preserving the 18th century monument built by Piyoli Phukan, a legendary freedom fighter who resisted British rule in Assam, seems to have halted with just the foundation stone being laid by Mayur Borgohain, Chairman of the Tai Ahom Development Council, on March 18.

Locals expressed frustration, questioning whether the project had been completed with just the foundation stone plaque installation. They demanded intervention from local authorities to revive the stalled project and preserve the cultural heritage site.
