HOJAI: Acting on a tipoff, Hojai Police launched an operation at Hojai-Lumding National Highway 27 within Hojai district in the wee hours of June 5, where huge amounts of suspected heroin (drugs) were seized and two drug peddlers arrested. As per the information, the accused have been identified as Shahid Ahmed Mazumdar and Rahanul Islam, both residents of Cachar.

Reportedly, the police have seized 50 soap boxes containing 820 .51 grams of contraband from their possession. Talking to the media, SP Saurab Gupta said that Hojai Police’s mission against illicit drugs being on a crusade, they were able to apprehend two drug peddlers along with a huge quantity of drugs on June 5.

The SP said that they got the input that a drug consignment was inbound towards Nagaon in Central Assam from out of the state via Barak Valley and that there would be an exchange at the Hojai-Murajhar area.

The SP added that the police accordingly launched the operation at Hojai-Lumding National Highway 27 and installed check points at specific locations. He said that along with the drug consignment, two vehicles were also seized from their possession at the Lumding Reserve area. SP Gupta informed that the market value of the drugs would be around Rs 2 crore 10 lakhs approximately. He said that 3 other persons were on the police radar and accor-dingly, an investi-gation was going on. He added that further operations were going on to bust the racket and their nexus in the district.
