BAKSA: As many as seven persons were arrested in a human trafficking case by Kumarikata police along the Indo-Bhutan border in Baksa district on Tuesday morning. Based on information about human trafficking, Nilavjyoti Nath, in-charge of Kumarikata police outpost, launched an operation with a police team and SSB team at Kumarikata along the Indo-Bhutan border on Tuesday morning and arrested seven human trafficking agents and rescued several women and seven adolescents (minor girls) who are from Darangamela, Kawli, Kumarikata, Guwabari and Nagrijuli areas of Baksa district. The police team rescued seven adolescents and several women from a bus. They were being trafficked to Gujarat from the Indo-Bhutan border under Tamulpur subdivision of Baksa district. They were lured with promises of good jobs.

Police arrested the bus driver, his wife, a man and four other women and seized the bus bearing the registration number GJ-14V-7111. According to police, adolescents (minor girls) are tempted with jobs and they leave their homes without informing their parents. The trafficking agents were taking the seven adolescents along with 31 others to Gujarat by luring them with jobs in fish factories in different parts of Gujarat.

The bus arrived in Assam's Darrangamela from Gujarat to take the women, youths and adolescent girls to a fish factory in Gujarat named Rameshwari. A case has already been registered against the arrested persons in Tamulpur police station.

The question which arises is how the bus came to Baksa from Gujarat at a time when inter-district travel is prohibited in the State? Subdivisional Police Officer Rupjyoti Kalita arrived at Kumarikata police outpost and investigation is underway. Police did not disclose the names of the arrested traffickers for the sake of further investigation.

On Wednesday morning, Kumarikata police made arrangements for the adolescents to be brought to the Baksa district Child Welfare Committee. On the other hand, the arrested persons were produced in front of the judicial magistrate at Mushalpur court and remanded to judicial custody.
