MARGHERITA: The International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Tinsukia District Committee, said that it is shocked by the Gauhati High Court’s decision to issue a stay order on the suspension of 21 gazetted officers.
The suspension was based on an investigation led by the Biplob Sharma Commission, whose credibility is now being questioned and it is unfortunate that despite being aware of all the facts, the administration and the government took such a decision. The court’s stay order due to a lack of substantial evidence highlights how corrupt individuals may escape punishment using technical loopholes, said L Ratan Singh, General Secretary of International Human Rights Council, Tinsukia District Committee.
The committee stated it fears that if such inconsistencies continue due to the government’s double standards, it will hinder the state’s development and social justice as those officers who have secured jobs through unethical means could become a serious threat to society in the future. The committee demands that the Assam Government must file a fresh appeal in the Supreme Court regarding this matter, with additional evidence gathered to take steps toward the permanent dismissal of these officers. If necessary, discussions with the Central Government should be initiated to propose constitutional amendments ensuring that corrupt officials do not receive job security, said L Ratan Singh.
