NAZIRA: A controversy has erupted over illegal stone quarrying on the Assam-Nagaland border in the vicinity of Bihubar. Despite the concerns raised by local residents, the forest department and police administration seem to be turning a blind eye to the issue.
The illegal quarrying has not only raised concerns about the safety of the local residents but also poses a threat to the environment and public health. The Dikhau river, which flows nearby, is at risk of changing its course due to the quarrying activities, putting the lives of the residents in danger.
The stone mafia, allegedly led by individuals such as Riaz Ali alias Nanki, Gazi Khan, and Zakir Ali, has been operating with impunity, with local residents expressing frustration over the lack of action by the authorities. The forest department and police administration’s inaction has emboldened the stone mafia, which is now operating openly in the area. The situation on the ground is alarming, with heavy machinery and dumpers being used for quarrying activities.
The residents have demanded action against the stone mafia and sought protection for their lives and property.
