Influx of illegal immigrants will be stopped if BJP comes to power: Rajnath Singh

GUWAHATI: While addressing an election rally at poll bound Assam Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that when there will be a BJP government in Assam, Tripura as well as West Bengal, no intruder will be able to make inroads towards the region.

Exhorting confidence that the BJP will be formed in Assam as well as the neighbouring state West Bengal, whilst it's already in power in Tripura, Singh said that the influx of illegal immigrants will be stopped if the party comes to power.

The Minister further assured that the state will witness development in the coming days under the BJP government.

Praising the state government led by CM Sarbananda Sonowal while addressing a rally in Biswanath on Sunday, Singh said that the present government has worked for the development of the state which the Congress was unable to do in 15 years.

Singh said in the last five years of the BJP rule, terrorism and insurgency have declined in the state with dozens of insurgent groups laying down their arms and returning to the mainstream have led to further development in the state. He also added that peace has returned in the state.

Speaking about the border areas, he stated that the BJP government has sealed a major portion of the India-Bangladesh border and installed electronic surveillance along the riverine stretch.

"We have sealed the international border in Dhubri. Whatever little stretch is left unfenced will be completely seated after the BJP returns to power in Assam," he said adding that if BJP comes to power it will block all borders to stop the entry of illegal Bangladeshis into India.

He was campaigning for sitting BJP MLA Promod Borthakur, who will have a direct contest with Congress nominee Anjan Borah in Biswanath seat that is going to polls in the first phase on March 27.

Later in the day, he went to Dergaon to campaign for BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad's sitting MLA Bhabendra Nath Bharali who will be contesting against Congress candidate Bani Hazarika.

Slamming the Congress for joining hands with the Badaruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Singh claimed that the former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi never joined hands with AIUDF but now the Congress is joining hands to grab power in the state.
