Insurgency Has Ended in Northeast India: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Speaking on the occasion of the 70th Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC), at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that the conditions of the region are now very stable. And the era of insurgency can be called history in Assam as the state is now moving towards a new age of development and growth. He also lauded the Home Minister's efforts towards the same direction in the Northeastern Region of the country.

He also stated that a process has been initiated to completely resolve the border disputes between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Half of the issues between Assam and Meghalaya have already been resolved. The Assam CM asserted that collective efforts from the governments of all the Northeastern states along with the support of the central government are essential for reaching a final and permanent solution to all the border problems.

The insurgency was the key reason the Northeastern region lags behind the rest of the country. It hampered the growth of infrastructure, health, education and mostly tourism in this region. As the issue is being tackled now, all the states of the region are also growing rapidly. Permanent peace and understanding between all the stakeholders can usher the economic growth of the region.

The narcotics problem of the region also needs immediate attention. And Assam flood is another key issue which needs to be mitigated immediately and effectively mentioned by the chief minister.

The development of travel infrastructure has vastly benefited the region, mentioned the CM. With the Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme, more and more locations in Northeast India are being added to the air travel destinations of the country. And this growth in air connectivity has been a huge boost to tourism and finally the economy of the region.

The need to preserve and showcase the culture of the region also came up in the meeting. Assam CM proposed the setting up of a museum in Guwahati to display the culture of all the Northeastern states.

The second day's events were attended by Minister of DoNER - G Kishen Reddy, Minister of State for DoNER - BL Verma, Governor of Assam and Nagaland - Professor Jagdish Mukhi, along with other dignitaries.
