TINSUKIA: An awareness programme on post-harvest management of paddy and seed certification was organized by Jeeva Suraksha, a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with NABARD at the gaonburah's office premise at Tamulikhat village under Tengakhat block in Dibrugarh district on Monday.

A total of 30 participants of Tamilikhat, including the beneficiaries of Ranjit (HYV) seed village developed by Jeeva Surakha under financial support from NABARD with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dibrugarh's technical collaboration, participated in the programme.

Briefing the detailed programme, coordinator Dr Ranjita Bania highlighted the concept of Paddy Seed Village and the pros and cons in developing the same. The area covered under Ranjit paddy cultivation programme has showed very good results, she added while appreciating the effort of KVK, Dibrugarh to help Jeeva Surakha to achieve the goals from its inception.

Delivering his address, BB Parashar, DDM, NABARD, Dibrugarh briefed about the importance of paddy seed village and its sustainability. He also added that marketing of produce was most important that demanded the maintenance of quality product in the long run. Being the first village of its kind in the district, he would try to draw attention of the Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh to take necessary step if possible to purchase the produce to encourage the farmers towards certified seed production, Parasar said.

Madhu Kakoty from Assam Seed Certification Agency appealed to the farmers to store the paddy seed as per rules and regulations laid by ASCA to get good quality seeds. The sample of seeds will be collected by the end of March for testing and tagging will be done in the beginning of April, after which only the farmers can sell the produce as certified seed, Kakoty said.

Sanghomita Sarma and Hemchandra Saikia, SMS from Dibrugarh KVK, put forward their valuable suggestions for success of paddy seed village and assured their support in future. The programme was conducted by Gojen Gogoi, secretary of Tamulikhat Pathar Parichalana Samity.
