Bokakhat: Jiten Gogoi, the central vice-president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), resigned from the party on Friday and locked the party office in Bokakhat. He announced that he would contest as an independent candidate from the Bokakhat Assembly Constituency in the upcoming 2026 elections.
“I have won before as an independent candidate, and I will contest again as an independent,” stated Jiten Gogoi, former MLA who won twice from Bokakhat and served as the Central Vice-President of the AJP. Speaking to the media in Bokakhat, Gogoi said that if the people of Bokakhat elect him in 2026, he would work with whichever party forms the government to ensure development in Bokakhat.
He added, “I have no dream of becoming a minister, nor do I aspire to do anything for Assam as a whole. Whatever I do, I will do for Bokakhat and stand by its people. I will not support any particular party.”
Notably, after the AJP’s complete failure in the 2025 Panchayat elections in Bokakhat, Jiten Gogoi, who was also the president of the Bokakhat Nirman Group, expressed his disappointment and locked the party office, which was situated in his own house.
While talking to media, Gogoi expressed anger and sorrow, stating, “I have always been inspired by nationalist ideology. That is why, even after having the opportunity, I didn’t join any national party and chose the Assam Jatiya Parishad instead.” He reiterated that he had worked hard to build a strong committee of the AJP in the Bokakhat region, but the committee failed to even field a candidate in the Panchayat elections, a matter he expressed regret over.
Referring to the mandate, he said the voters no longer desire a candidate from any nationalist or political party and instead want ‘Jiten Gogoi’ from Bokakhat. He confessed that such sentiments had deeply affected him emotionally.
Despite this, Gogoi said he had extended as much support as he could to the AJP, but the Panchayat election results failed to provide the party with any standing in Bokakhat. As President of the Nirman Group, he said he now faces numerous questions from many people due to the candidate’s failure. He also mentioned being questioned even during the vote counting process by candidates from other parties and organizations.
Gogoi added that he couldn’t stay at home the day after the counting due to the situation that arose. Consequently, he locked the AJP office in Bokakhat immediately. He clarified that if anyone else wishes to continue the AJP in Bokakhat, he has no objections.
When asked about the future of the AJP in current political circumstances, Gogoi stated that the public mandate itself has shown what the future holds. “If the party has no presence in grassroots elections, how can it succeed in Assembly or Parliamentary elections?” he questioned.
