Morigaon: The historic barter system of goods among Mamas and Mamis gathered from over 57 villages of Karbianglong and over 30 from Meghalaya state will witness Junbeel Pather like every year tomorrow after bathing in the Junbeel pond. The historical Junbeel began on Thursday at Junbeel Pather with the inaugural speech of the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the royal court of the King of Gova, which was conducted by the secretary of the Mela Committee, Jurshing Bordoloi.

The historical Junbeel Mela, a sign of harmony among the Tiwa people of Central Assam, was held on the banks of Junbeel along the road connecting Jagiroad and Morigaon for three days from today.

The event began with a community worshipping at the Charibhai Deoshal Shiv Temple at Jagiroad in the early morning. Thereafter the event was followed by the lighting of lanterns by Soneswar Deuri, President of the Celebration Committee, and the hoisting of the flag by Gobha Raja Dipsingh Deurjai Junbeel Pather.

It is worth mentioning that the Junbeel Mela is still held at the time and day fixed by the Gova Deu Raja despite many radical changes in the society of Khumia, the shrine of modern society. On the other hand, the circulation of modern currency will come to a halt for a day as it occupies an important place in the era of rapid development of modern science and information technology. The Junbeel Mela is a beautiful example of the heritage and traditions of Assam. He also said that Rs 5 crore has been approved by the Assam cabinet for the construction of a permanent stage and theatre for the Junbeel Mela.

The Chief Minister also presented royal allowances to 22 Tiwa symbolic kings in the presence of the Raj Darbar. The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveiled a souvenir at the Junbeel Mela in the presence of 22 Tiwa symbolic kings’. Thousands of people from the state and abroad come to witness the seemingly strange exchange practices in the days of globalization.
