Justice for Nandita Saikia: Stir continues in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, capital punishment demanded

LAKHIMPUR: Agitation programmes continue in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts to demand capital punishment to Rintu Sarmah, the alleged killer of Nandita Saikia, the student of Moridhol College in Dhemaji district, who breathed her last on Wednesday after being severely injured during the attack by the accused on August 21 in Dhemaji town. In this context, the members of the Lakhimpur district units of All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan, All India Democratic Students' Organization (AIDSO) and All India Democratic Youth Organization (AIDYO) staged torch light rally on Wednesday evening in North Lakhimpur from Nakari to Saboti. During the demonstration, the members of the organizations shouted slogans demanding the trial of the accused in fast track court and to hang him until death. They also demanded the State Government to ensure the security of women in the State.

Similarly, Dhemaji district unit All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Dipak Sarmah and general secretary Kalyan Gogoi also demanded the trial of Rintu Sarmah in fast track court.

On the other hand, State president of the United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO), Manuranjan Basumatary, general secretary Pitambar Brahma, and chairperson Badal Mussahari also demanded for exemplary punishment to the culprit. They expressed profound grief at the immature demise of the meritorious student of Moridhol College of Dhemaji district.

Moreover, Dhemaji district units of Bengali Youth-Students' Federation, Sonowal Kachari Jatiya Parishad, All Bodo Students' Union, Jonai district unit of Takam Mising Porin Kebang demanded exemplary punishment to the accused and condemned the heinous incident. The organizations expressed grief at the demise of Nandita Saikia and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
