DOOMDOOMA: Kakapather Block Congress president Lakhi Sonowal died in a road mishap when a garden tractor carrying water tank knocked his Scooty from behind at around 2 pm near Tippuk TE factory on Wednesday.

The driver of the tractor reportedly fled the spot just after the accident and the manager of the garden brought Lakhi Sonowal in his vehicle to the Doomdooma 30-bedded FRU where he was declared to be brought dead by the doctors. He was 69 and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. He was an active and dedicated Congress worker and besides serving the party in various capacities in its organizational matters, he was Ward Commissioner of Doomdooma Town Committee (later upgraded to Doomdooma Municipal Board) since 2004.

Prior to that he was member of the Bipin Chandra Baruah-led Doomdooma Town Committee (Ad-hoc) in 1983 and in 1993-94, he himself was the chairman of the Doomdooma Town Committee (Ad-hoc). He was also a member of sports club 'Youngmen's Association' formed in 1975 for the purpose of organizing football, volleyball and cricket events in the town.

In the meanwhile, his body was sent for postmortem examination at Tinsukia. His untimely death cast a pall of gloom in the area and his demise was widely mourned by many organizations, including Doomdooma Press Club (DPC), Doomdooma Sports' Association (DSA) and local MLA Durga Bhumij, who, in a condolence message from Guwahati, stated that Lakhi Sonowal's death was 'great loss' for the Indian National Congress (INC) party.
