Kali Puja update: date, time and significance

Assam: Kali Puja, also known as Dipanwita Kali Puja, Shyama Puja or Mahanisha puja, is a Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Kali.

It is primarily observed in parts of Assam and West Bengal.

Kali is said to be the personification of Shakti, which she wielded to kill all the demons and save the earth. Kali puja is celebrated to seek the blessing of the goddess to ward off evil and receive happiness, health, wealth and peace.

Generally, takes place at night. Devotees perform the puja by offering hibiscus flowers which are believed to the goddess's favourite flower. While most of the Hindus worship Lakshmi on Diwali; Bengalis, Odias, Assamese and Maithilis worship Kali.

This year, Kali puja is celebrated on Saturday, November 24, 2020. Kali Puja Nishita Time begins at 11:39 PM on November 14 and ends at 12:32 AM, on November 15, 2020.

Diwali puja and Kali puja usually falls on the same day however, at times, Kali Puja might fall a day before Diwali.
