HOWRAGHAT: Karbi Students' Association (Inglongpho faction) took out a torch light procession in Diphu on Tuesday evening demanding immediate implementation of Article 244(A), deletion of names of non-tribals from the voter list of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and non-issuance of trading licenses and land pattas to the non tribal people.
The rally was taken out at around 6.30 pm taking torch lights in their hands, starting from KSA Central Executive Committee (CEC) office, Rongthe-ang to Diphu market, passing through Sirvomu statue, KAAC entrance gate and Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park. Finally the rally assembled at the KSA office.
The KSA activists of Diphu regional committee and CEC leaders took part in the rally. A bike rally was also taken out recently from Diphu to Howraghat by the Karbi students on the same issues.
Thangsing Timung, president of KSA, alleged that the issues of the tribal people were not heard and even the indigenous tribal people of the hill districts had been suppressed and betrayed by the government. In this regard, the Central as well as the State governments have been ignoring the long-standing demand to implement Article 244(A)
Instead of giving more rights and protection to the hill people, the provisions of power entrusted to the KAAC under the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India, have been cut off gradually by the government, the student leader said.
