KHERONI: The main road connecting Kheroni Charali to Donkamokam, a vital lifeline for West Karbi Anglong district, has deteriorated into a hazardous state, causing severe disruptions for residents, students, farmers, traders, and government employees.
Located just three kilometers from the office of the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), Kheroni Sub-Division, this stretch serves as the only major route linking Donkamokam—the hometown of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, who also holds charge of PWD, KAAC—with the rest of the district.
The road’s deplorable condition, marked by uneven surfaces, deep potholes, and poor maintenance, has turned daily commutes into a dangerous ordeal. The situation was highlighted recently when an oil tanker overturned at Kheroni Charali, followed by another accident on Saturday involving a bamboo-laden Tata Mobile truck at the same location. These incidents underline the road’s dangerous state, posing serious safety risks in all weather conditions.
This stretch is also the sole access route for essential services, including schools, colleges, banks, the police station, government offices, the government hospital, Public Health Engineering (PHE) offices, emergency services, and local markets. It further serves as the main approach road for two local representatives—Pawan Kumar, Kapili MAC, and Smt. Rina Terangpi, Executive Member and MAC Amreng, KAAC—whose residences lie just 2–3 kilometers from Kheroni Charali. Despite the road’s strategic importance, no significant repair work has been undertaken by the PWD or local authorities.
Residents allege that the condition of the road has been ignored for months, despite repeated media coverage and public outcry on social media. The continued inaction of the KAAC, PWD, and elected representatives has deepened frustration among commuters, who face daily hardships and growing safety concerns. The community is now urgently demanding that authorities prioritize repairs to restore safe and reliable access along this crucial roadway.
