Kidney Trafficking Case: Gauhati HC Rejects Prime Accused Plaban Barthakur's Bail

GUWAHATI: Gauhati high court has denied the bail plea of Plaban Barthakur, the prime accused in the recent kidney trafficking case in Assam. The court gave this judgment on Tuesday.

As per reports, apart from Plaban Barthakur, the bail plea of another accused in the kidney trafficking case Mintu Das has been rejected. The court denied both the accused persons' bail after the court observed that there were enough evidences against them. The advocate who argued in the court on behalf of the government in the kidney trafficking case is Makhan Phukan.

Several cases of organ trafficking were reported from Assam in July this year following which the prime accused Plaban Barthakur was arrested by police.

In July this year, a man of Tinsukia district Arup Kumar Sinha sold his kidney for an amount of Rs. 4 lakh in Kolkata because of poverty. He was detained by the police to find out if there was existence of any human organ trafficking racket in the case. In the same month (July), police had busted an inter-state gang involved in the illegal trade of human organs in Morigaon district.

Last month, police arrested a man Girin Sonowal in Dibrugarh for his suspected nexus with an organ trafficking racket. Girin Sonowal (alias Gautam Sonowal) is a resident of Lalmati area in Dibrugarh. He remained out of the reach of police for months.

As per experts, human organ traffickers often target people from economically weaker classes of the society. The Covid-19 pandemic has also made life miserable for a large section of people and some of them are becoming prey to the traffickers.
