MANGALDAI: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Udalguri organized a day-long programme on Plant Genetic Resources Conservation Awareness and Biodiversity Fair at KVK complex at Lalpul in Udalguri district today in collaboration with the ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi. The event was aimed to raise awareness about the importance of conserving local plant genetic resources and preserving biodiversity. The inaugural ceremony began with lightening of lamp by Chief Guest Dr Prabin Kr Singh, Principal Scientist and Head, NBPGR, in presence of Dwijen Chowudhury, Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture, Diganta Deka, General Secretary, Bharatiya Kisan Sangha, Assam, and Kumud Saharia, Secretary, Bharatiya Kisan Sangha.

Dr Diganta Sharmah, Senior Scientist and Head, welcomed the dignitaries and emphasized the critical need to conserve indigenous plant varieties to ensure sustainable agriculture. In his speech, Dr Prabin Kr Singh, Principal Scientist and Head and Dr Monika Jha, Scientist, NBPGR, highlighted the importance of conserving plant genetic resources and urged farmers to conserve and communicate about the germplasm to the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, for further record keeping. Their presentations offered valuable knowledge and practical strategies for safeguarding local biodiversity. As part of the initiative, inputs were distributed to 200 farmers to support their participation in conservation activities. Priyanka Bora anchored the programme, ensuring its smooth coordination and Dr Pallavi Deka, Course Coordinator, highlighted the vital role of farmers in biodiversity conservation and encouraged them to actively engage in the efforts.

Dr Himadri Rabha, SMS, Plant Protection, offered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, farmers, and staff of KVK, Udalguri, for their valuable contributions to the event.
