Lack of Rainfall Triggers Tension Among Farmers in Assam

NUMALIGARH: The farmers of Assam are in great peril because of the lack of rain in the last few days. The increase in temperatures and the lack of seasonal rains have triggered a heat wave and dry spell which has made it impossible for the farmers to begin the new crop.

The paddy cultivators of the state including those of Numaligarh are in a tense situation because of the same. The drought-like situations have made it impossible for the farmers to carry on with the sowing of paddy during this season causing delays in the crop season.

Since a particular variety of paddy is being cultivated in the Marangi region of Numaligarh, this drought-like situation has put them at serious risk. Changes in the seasonal cycle and the comparatively lesser rainfall have affected the farmers of the region.

Recently the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) of Arunachal Pradesh, Rajesh S has launched a three-day workshop-cum-capacity building training on ‘Climate Change and Human Health’ (CCHH) for the officials of 25 districts, including Itanagar. The workshop, which began on Monday, is specifically for the District Surveillance Officers (DSOs), District Epidemiologists (DEs) and Data Manager (DM)/Data entry Operator (DEO). The workshop would conclude on Wednesday, official sources informed here.

The prime motive behind the workshop is to provide an understanding of the importance of CCHH, its surveillance and monitoring mechanisms as per the guidelines from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Also, the workshop focuses to train the District Surveillance Units in better planning and implementation of the Vertical Health Programs. The training also focuses on building relationships among the Department of Health with other stakeholders of Climate Change so that they can complement each other in various public health response-related activities.
