LAKHIMPUR: The Golden Jubilee Year District Day of Lakhimpur was celebrated across the district in an enthusiastic and festive environment on Sunday. Lakhimpur first came to existence as an administrative district in 1838 during the regime of the British by covering the area from Biswanath to Sadia, including the present Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. The present Lakhimpur district was formed in 1971 on October 2 during the term of the State Government led by Chief Minister Mahendra Mohan Choudhury.

Various organizations, institutions and individuals celebrated the District Day of Lakhimpur on Sunday by organizing programmes of their own. The Lakhimpur district administration centrally observed the event at Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town in a befitting manner.

The agenda of the event kick-started with a cycle rally in the early morning wherein Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, District Sports Officer Jintu Sarmah, officers and employees of the government departments, students, members of the public took part. It was followed by a plantation drive initiated by the Forest Department at Tyag Kshetra and across the district. Then rich tribute was paid to Mahatma Gandhi, the 'Father of the Nation', by lighting earthen lamps in front of his statue at Gandhi Park in connection with the International Non-Violence Day.

In the context of the District Day, a colourful cultural procession was taken out around 10:00 am by showcasing the native cultures of the indigenous tribes and communities living in the State. The cultural procession was inaugurated by Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and MLA Manab Deka. In addition, several Government departments under the district also organized programmes in order to celebrate the event.

On the other hand, the public meeting-cum-prize distribution ceremony on the occasion was held at Tyag Kshetra from 3:00 pm. It commenced with the welcome address delivered by Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan. In his lecture, the Deputy Commissioner said, "Lakhimpur district is the reservoir of unique potentials. By using the resources and potentials well, the district can be ameliorated to establish it to be one of the notable districts of the State," he said. He appealed to all to come forward to work dedicatedly for the betterment of the district.

In the programme, octogenarian politician-cum-former Education Minister Premadhar Borah delivered a lecture as guest of honour. He threw light upon the glorious history of the district. In his lecture, he explained how a remarkable number of enlightened, prominent, pioneer personalities from Lakhimpur district, including Mahapurush Madhavdev, led the State towards progress indifferent fields. MP Pradan Baruah and Bihpuria MLA Dr Amiya Kumar Bhuyan also delivered lectures in the meeting, wherein MLA Manab Deka, SP Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa, former Lakhimpur MLA Utpal Dutta, North Lakhimpur Municipal Board chairperson Nibenita Dutta, Lakhimpur District Development Authority president Samiran Konwar along with a galaxy of prominent persons were present. In the same event, prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions organized by different Government departments of the district in connection with the Golden Jubilee Year District Day. Moreover, meritorious students who passed the HSLC exam with flying colours were also felicitated on the occasion. Achievers of the Government departments under the district were also feted.

In the evening, a cultural function was organized, wherein popular vocal artiste Mousam Gogoi and local artistes performed cultural items. The people across the district lit earthen lamps in their household in the evening on the occasion of the District Day.
